If you’re craving a serene escape into the heart of the Himalayas, the Khopra Ridge Community Trek offers one of the most breathtaking off-the-beaten-path adventures in the Annapurna region. Perfect for nature lovers and trekkers looking to go beyond the popular routes, this trail immerses you in raw Himalayan beauty and vibrant cultural experiences.
At an altitude of 4,660 meters, the sacred Khayer Lake awaits—an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, set against a stunning alpine backdrop. From Khopra Ridge, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of some of the world’s most iconic peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, II, III & South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and Lamjung Himal.
The journey takes you through lush rhododendron forests teeming with wildlife such as Himalayan pheasants, yaks, and even snow leopards, while passing through charming villages, terraced hillsides, and crystal-clear rivers.
What makes this trek truly special is its community-based approach. Instead of standard commercial lodges, you’ll stay in locally-run community lodges, where your presence directly supports the people who live in these remote mountain regions. This sustainable model offers not just a trek, but a meaningful connection with the land and its people.
Overview
The Annapurna Khopra Ridge Trek typically begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Birethanti, followed by a trek through Tikhedhunga to Ulleri. From Ulleri, you’ll head to Ghorepani, passing through traditional villages where you can interact with locals and learn about their culture and daily life. Along the route, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli.
To witness a spectacular sunrise over the snow-capped Himalayas, you’ll hike to Poon Hill early the next morning. From there, you can admire breathtaking views of glaciers and peaks such as Hiunchuli, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Khangsar Kang, and Machhapuchhre.
The trek continues to Swanta, and from there, a narrow trail leads to Khopra Danda. After spending the night, you’ll make a day hike to the sacred Khayer Lake, located in a steep and challenging terrain, then return to Khopra Danda—an effort that takes about 5 to 6 hours. The journey then descends through Chistibang’s grasslands and timberline forests to Bayali Kharka, and further through vibrant rhododendron forests to Tadapani. From Tadapani, you’ll trek to Ghandruk, where a private jeep will take you back to Pokhara, marking the end of your 12-day Khopra Khayer Lake Trek.

Best Time to Trek: Seasons & Weather
Autumn (September–November):
This is the ideal season for trekking in the Himalayas. The weather is stable, skies are clear, and temperatures are mild—not too hot or cold. Visibility is excellent, making it perfect for panoramic views. Rainfall is minimal, making trail conditions optimal.
Spring (March–May):
Known as the rhododendron season, spring offers vibrant floral displays along the trail. The weather is warm and clear, with minimal chances of rain or snow. Visibility is also excellent, though conditions may become less favorable toward the end of the season.
While trekking is possible year-round, spring and autumn provide the best experiences.
Meals on the Trek
Breakfast:
A nourishing meal to fuel your trek, typically including bread, chapati, eggs, porridge, soup, pancakes, and cereal.
Lunch:
Lunch is the main meal in Nepal and usually includes dal bhat (lentils and rice), noodles, pasta, momos (dumplings), and more. Western options like pizza, burgers, and desserts are also available in many teahouses.
Dinner:
Similar to lunch, dinner is served in the same teahouse where you stay. Dal bhat is a staple, though international dishes are commonly available. A variety of hot and cold beverages is also offered.

Trek Difficulty
The Khopra Danda Trek is rated easy to moderately difficult and is suitable for all age groups. Elevations range from 2,000 to 5,000 meters. Compared to treks like Annapurna Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, this trek is shorter and less strenuous. Expect to walk 5–6 hours daily, with occasional longer days (up to 8 hours). Pre-trek physical preparation is recommended.
Travel Insurance
Although altitude sickness is less common on this moderate trek, unforeseen events like illness, landslides, or bad weather can occur. Travel insurance is mandatory and must include coverage for high-altitude emergency rescue and helicopter evacuation. While we don’t sell insurance, we can recommend providers. Please send us a copy of your policy before your arrival so we can assist quickly in emergencies.
Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can occur above 3,000 meters. Khayer Lake reaches 4,660 meters, so precautions are essential. Symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
