After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, you'll travel by vehicle to Sundarijal, known for its beautiful oak and rhododendron forests, as well as stunning waterfalls—perfect for a picnic. The trek starts with a steep climb from Sundarijal, and after about an hour of hiking, you'll reach the entrance to Shivapuri National Park. From there, the path ascends a series of narrow stairs leading to Mulkharka.
Continuing through rural farm fields and cool woodlands, you’ll pass the picturesque village of Borlang Bhanjyang before reaching Chisapani. Chisapani is a popular short hike near Kathmandu, offering breathtaking views of mountains like Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal, Himal Chuli, Gauri Shanker, Rolwaling, Dorje Lakpa, and the Langtang range. You can also enjoy stunning views of the valleys below and a beautiful sunrise.
On a clear morning, Chisapani offers stunning panoramic views of the Langtang Himal range. Today's route descends towards the small village of Pati Bhanjyang, passing through scenic meadows and farmland. You'll then reach the Sherpa settlement of Thankune Bhanjyang, walking through farming communities surrounded by beautiful landscapes. As you continue, you'll encounter terraced farms and trails leading into local woodlands.
Next, you'll pass through the Sherpa village of Chipling before reaching the Tamang villages of Thotung and Golphu Bhanjyang. After a 1.5-hour ascent, you'll reach a ridge, followed by a 45-minute descent to Kutumsang. The day's trek ends in Kutumsang, a village with traditional homes and mist-covered slopes, offering stunning views of Dorje Lhakpa's pyramidal peak.
Today, you will ascend over 1200 meters toward Thadepati Bhanjyang, the highest point of your Helambu Circuit Trek. The hike begins with a climb to the ridgeline of Yurin Danda, where you will get your first views of the Langtang range, Gosaikunda peak, and Jugal Himal. Continuing on, you'll navigate some rugged trails to Mera Danda, then descend to the small settlement of Mangengoth.
Beyond the Thare Danda ridge, you'll reach Tharepati, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Langtang ranges. Continuing up a ridge just above the settlement, you'll find a great spot for stunning sunrise views. From there, you'll head east and descend steeply through an ancient pine forest. The trail leads you to a ridge spine, followed by a descent into Melamchi Gaon, a large Sherpa village.
Today, your journey will descend from Melamchi Gaon to Melamchi Khola, passing through Buddhist settlements like Nakote, Dozum, and Chiri. The settlement of Tarkeghyang takes its name from its monastery, the oldest in the Helambu region. These close-knit villages offer a glimpse into traditional western Nepali life.
From Tarkeghyang, the trek continues southwest along gently sloping forested trails. You'll pass streams, fields, and small villages on the way to Setighyang. Continuing onward, you’ll reach Ghangyul and, after 4-5 hours of hiking, arrive at the charming village of Sermathang. The village is home to three significant gompas, and offers stunning views of the Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and Gaurishankar to the east.
After a leisurely breakfast in Sermathang, you'll begin your hike, descending through rice fields and lush meadows. You'll pass charming villages like Kakani and Thimbu as you leave Sermathang. The landscape will change as you enter a subtropical area, with new vegetation along the way. Approaching Melamchi Pul Bazaar, a Sherpa settlement, you'll cross several bridges and pass through small communities featuring chortens and mani walls. Useful Information for Helambu Circuit Trek
Best Time to Trek the Helambu Circuit
The best time to trek Helambu depends largely on the weather, which plays a key role in your experience. While trekkers visit year-round, certain seasons offer better conditions.
- March to May (Spring)
Spring is a popular time to visit Helambu due to moderate temperatures and clear skies. The lower altitudes are warmer, and by April, the trails are adorned with vibrant rhododendron blooms. This period offers ideal hiking conditions, with pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall. - September to November (Autumn)
Autumn is another excellent trekking season. The weather is clear, and the skies are bright, providing spectacular mountain views. The monsoon season ends in early September, leaving behind lush green landscapes and golden-hued fields. This period also coincides with two major Nepali festivals, Dashain and Tihar, adding cultural richness to your trek.
Food on the Helambu Circuit Trek
The trek offers a variety of regional, Asian, and Western dishes. We recommend consuming fresh vegetables, hot drinks, and herbal soups, like ginger, garlic, and lemon tea, to stay hydrated and energized. It’s best to avoid non-vegetarian dishes, dairy, alcohol, and caffeine for hygiene and health reasons.
- Breakfast: Choose from eggs, pancakes, muesli, French toast, Tibetan bread, tsampa porridge, fruits, and hot drinks.
- Lunch and Dinner: Options include Dhal Bhat, Tibetan bread, Sherpa stew, momo, sandwiches, pasta, noodles, soups, and local salads.
Accommodation on the Helambu Circuit Trek
Various hotels, lodges, and tea houses are available along the trekking route. Rooms typically feature twin beds with mattresses, pillows, and blankets. At higher altitudes, accommodations become simpler, and solo rooms may be less available. Shared bathrooms are common in higher areas, but more private options are available at lower elevations.
Travel Insurance for Helambu Circuit Trek
Given the moderate difficulty and rural nature of the trek, having proper travel insurance is crucial. Your policy should cover medical expenses, high-altitude rescue, and emergency evacuation up to at least 5000 meters. Insurance ensures peace of mind in case of unexpected events like landslides or medical emergencies.
Altitude Sickness and Remedies
Altitude sickness can affect trekkers above 3000 meters. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, and loss of appetite. To mitigate this, trek slowly, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and ensure proper acclimatization. If symptoms worsen, descend to a lower elevation.
Difficulty Level of the Helambu Circuit Trek
The Helambu Circuit Trek is considered moderate, with a maximum altitude of 3690 meters at Thadepati. The trek involves five days of hiking, typically for 4-6 hours per day. While it’s not as high as other treks in Nepal, altitude adjustment and varying temperatures in the mornings and evenings can present challenges.
