Embark on a journey unlike any other through the hidden kingdom of Upper Mustang—one of Nepal’s most captivating and restricted regions. The Upper Mustang Trek offers an unforgettable adventure into a land of dramatic landscapes, timeless culture, and spiritual heritage.
As you travel through this ancient territory, you’ll experience a way of life untouched by the modern world. The region’s Tibetan-influenced traditions, preserved for centuries, are vividly alive in its remote villages, colorful prayer flags, whitewashed homes, and centuries-old chortens. Although the iconic five-story palace of Lo Manthang—the capital of the former Buddhist kingdom—is currently closed to visitors, the town itself remains a highlight of the journey, offering a powerful glimpse into Mustang’s royal past.
For decades, Upper Mustang was off-limits to foreign travelers, a policy designed to protect its fragile ecosystem and rich cultural fabric. Even today, access is tightly controlled through high permit fees to help preserve the area’s authenticity. With no luxury hotels or modern amenities, this trek invites you to embrace the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature and culture.
Wander along ancient salt trade routes, pass through sunbaked canyons and towering cliffs, and witness surreal rock formations sculpted by wind and time. As you ascend the Lo La Pass, the walled city of Lo Manthang slowly appears on the horizon—like a mirage from the past. Along the trail, prayer wheels spin in the wind, herds of livestock graze the fields, and unmarked chortens stand quietly as timeless guardians of the land.
The Upper Mustang Trek is more than a trek—it’s a passage into a lost world, rich in history, culture, and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Overview
The Upper Mustang Trek via Muktinath begins with a scenic journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara, where you’ll pass terraced fields, traditional villages, and the rushing Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers. The following day, you’ll take a short flight to Jomsom and begin your trek to Kagbeni, where you’ll spend the night.
From Kagbeni, the trail continues to Chele. You’ll then trek to Syangboche via Eklo Bhatti and the Taklam High Pass. The journey from Syangboche to Ghami takes you across the rugged Yamada La Pass, passing through Geling and Tamagaun.
