Upper Dolpo is one of Nepal’s last untouched frontiers—a remote Himalayan sanctuary where time stands still and adventure runs deep. Tucked away in the far northwest, this high-altitude region invites only the most curious and determined travelers to discover its raw beauty, ancient traditions, and breathtaking wilderness.
The Upper Dolpo Trek is an extraordinary journey through rugged terrain, crystal-clear lakes, and snow-capped peaks that few outsiders ever get to witness. Starting from the mountain airstrip of Juphal, the route winds through dramatic gorges, forested trails, and forgotten villages en route to Shey Phoksundo Lake, a turquoise gem cradled at 3,611 meters amidst towering cliffs and ringed by distant views of Mt. Kanjiroba.
As you follow this lesser-known path, you’ll explore Shey Phoksundo National Park, home to blue sheep, Himalayan black bears, and—if you’re lucky—a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. The trail also leads you through Ringmo, a charming village frozen in time, and onward to Shey Gompa, a revered monastery nestled beneath sacred peaks.
Culturally, Upper Dolpo offers a window into a way of life rarely seen elsewhere. The region’s Tibetan roots run deep—visible in the locals’ language, customs, clothing, and spiritual practices. You’ll encounter ancient Bon Po and Chaiba monasteries, where centuries-old rituals are still performed and belief systems predating Buddhism continue to thrive.
This is not just a trek—it’s a journey into a living museum of Himalayan culture, a sanctuary of natural beauty, and a true escape from the modern world. The Upper Dolpo Trek challenges your body, enriches your mind, and leaves you with unforgettable memories of one of the most isolated and inspiring regions on Earth.

Itinerary
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in a private tourist vehicle. Once you're settled at the hotel, we will schedule a trip briefing at the hotel lobby or restaurant.
After breakfast, you'll begin a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Later, you'll review your trekking gear and documents with your guide. In the evening, enjoy a walk through the lively streets of Thamel.
Today, your Upper Dolpo trekking adventure begins with a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj in western Nepal. The one-hour flight offers scenic views of the Terai region. Upon arrival, you'll check into your hotel. Nepalgunj, one of Nepal's busiest towns near the Indian border, offers opportunities to explore local markets, nearby villages, and a small zoo.
After a refreshing breakfast, you’ll take a scenic flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, with stunning views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m). Upon arrival, you’ll meet the rest of your trekking team and begin your Upper Dolpo adventure. The trail passes through terraced fields and leads to the Bheri River, continuing onward to Dunai, the administrative center of the Dolpo region.
After leaving Dunai, you’ll cross a suspension bridge and follow a forested trail westward. The path gradually ascends to the Thulo Bheri Valley, offering great views of Kagmara Peak. It then winds through small villages and walnut groves. Upon reaching Ankhe, you'll descend through the forest and spend the night at a tented camp.
You'll follow a challenging trail along a forested riverside, with frequent ascents and descents. Numerous streams along the way help keep the trek cool and refreshing. After leaving the forest, the path crosses a grassy hill, then re-enters dense woods leading to a cliff edge. From there, you’ll carefully descend a steep, uneven staircase before continuing along the riverbank to reach Sulighat.
Today’s hike leads to the confluence of the Phoksundo and Pungmo rivers. After crossing a bridge, you'll follow the western bank of the Pungmo Khola. The trail continues through a cedar forest to the village of Palam. From there, you'll climb to a ridge and descend through a lush birch forest. After crossing Phoksundo Khola, you'll reach the village of Ringmo. A short walk from here takes you to the stunning Phoksundo Lake.
Today is a rest day to help you acclimatize to the altitude. You'll take a short excursion to explore Ringmo village and visit an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery. This is a great opportunity to observe local life and experience the region’s rich culture and traditions. Later, enjoy the serene beauty of Phoksundo Lake and its surroundings.
While trekking along the western shore of Phoksundo Lake, you'll navigate a rugged and uneven trail. From the lake's far end, the path crosses a lush meadow and leads to the Phoksundo Khola plain. You'll continue through a valley, cross a river, and arrive at Phoksundo Khola, where you'll camp overnight in a tent.
At the junction of the Upper Dolpo Trek, the Phoksundo Khola meets another mountain stream, leading you north through a glacier valley. After crossing a deteriorated bridge, you’ll head northeast to a scenic sheep pasture. The trail then ascends a steep ravine, offering breathtaking views of Kang La Pass, as well as stunning views of Chamlang Peak (6,739 m) and Peak 7 (6,105 m).
Early in the morning, you'll tackle a challenging ascent to a pass. Although the climb is tough, the panoramic views from the summit are rewarding. Afterward, you'll descend steeply and follow a river's edge, crossing it several times as you pass through meadows. The meadows are home to yaks, mountain goats, and grazing sheep. Finally, you’ll cross a log bridge and reach Shey Gompa for the night.
Today is your second acclimatization day at Shey Gompa. You'll visit the ancient Shey Gompa monastery, built in 1655, famous for its large copper statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha covered in gold plating. To the east, you'll see Crystal Mountain, notable for its quartz-coated cliffs and marine fossils. This unique mountain is one of Nepal's oddest. Later, you'll explore Shey village and observe the traditional Bon Po lifestyle.
After passing through juniper trees, the Upper Dolpo Trek trail descends into a rocky canyon. From here, you’ll follow a zigzag path up to the summit of Saldang La Pass, crossing rocky terrain. The trail then turns south, leading to Namduna Gaun. Along the way, enjoy views of sheep and yaks grazing in the meadows. At Namduna Gaun, you'll visit the historic Namgung Monastery, built from red stone.
Today, you'll leave Namduna Gaun and begin climbing a dusty trail towards Saldang. After 3 to 4 hours of challenging ascent, you'll reach 4,800 meters. Then, you'll descend a steep slope to the charming village of Saldang, situated on a plateau above the Nam Khong Nala. As the largest village in lower Dolpo, Saldang thrives through agriculture and its strategic position along a trade route to Tibet.
Today, you'll trek through a barren area along the Nagon Khola in the north. The trail is relatively easy, with only a few ascents and descents. After passing the villages of Marang and Ki, you'll cross the Panzang River. The trail then turns east, leading you to Yangze Gompa, an ancient Bon Po monastery, after crossing one more river.
There are two routes to Sibu. You’ll take the simpler one back to Saldang. From Saldang, the path to Namdo village follows a river, passing stupas, chortens, terraced fields, and mani stones. After visiting Namdo Monastery, continue for another two hours to reach Sibu.
The Upper Dolpo Trek follows Nam Khong Khola, passing caravans along the way. Continuing east, you'll reach the confluence of two small streams. From there, a steep trail leads to the grazing area below Jeng La Pass, where you'll spend the night in a scenic meadow.
Early this morning, you'll begin your trek to Tokyu Gaon. First, you'll climb to Jeng La Pass for stunning views of Mount Dhaulagiri's north face (8167m). The trail then descends along a rocky path into Tarap Valley. From there, continue on to Tokyu Gaon for the night.
As you descend through a grassy valley, you'll gain a new view of Inner Dolpo. The trail passes through a marsh, typical of the desert mountain region, before leading to Dho Tarap, a settlement surrounded by crooked stone walls. Here, you can observe the unique Bon Po and Chaiba religions.
According to your Upper Dolpo Trekking Itinerary, today is your third acclimatization rest day in Dho Tarap. This day allows for acclimatization and gives you the opportunity to explore the village. You’ll interact with locals to learn about their culture, traditions, and the Chaiba and Bon Po religions. You can also enjoy their offerings and admire their traditional attire.
Your Upper Dolpo Trekking Trail descends from Dho Tarap into a broad valley that narrows into a canyon. Along the way, you may spot herds of blue sheep amid juniper and wild rose bushes. You will reach the junction of Lang Khola and Tarap Chu, where you’ll camp for the night in a peaceful meadow called Kamakharka, beside Tarap Khola.
After breakfast, you'll hike into the Tarap River gorge, where you'll see locals moving their livestock to lower grazing areas. The Upper Dolpo Trekking Route will pass through a narrow ravine, requiring careful jumps from one spot to another. The trail becomes more challenging as you cross small creeks on foot, as bridges may be damaged or swept away.
Following the Upper Dolpo Trek Route, you will reach Lalberi village. The trail then passes through dense woodland before descending into another canyon. After hiking through the gorge, you'll reach a river and continue along its edge to Tarakot, where you can visit Sandul Gompa. This gompa is located 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of the confluence of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu. After a break in Tarakot, you'll spend the night in a tent camp.
You will retrace your steps to Dunai, following the same route. After crossing a bridge near Lawan Village, you'll hike alongside the Bheri River. The trail then ascends to Byas Gadi before heading west on a straightforward path. After crossing a river near Lochakhola Gaon, you'll climb and reach Dunai for the night.
You will trek alongside the Bheri River, enjoying stunning views along the way. The route passes through the villages of Dhupichaur, Rupgad, Motipur, and Kalagaonda before reaching a small airfield for your flight back to Jhupal.
After breakfast, you will take a short, scenic flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. The flight offers stunning views of the Himalayas, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Your Upper Dolpo Trek concludes upon arrival in Nepalgunj, where you'll catch a flight back to Kathmandu. After checking into your three-star hotel in Kathmandu, you can relax for the rest of the day.
Today is a free day in Kathmandu. You can relax, shop, or explore the area. If you'd like, we can arrange a guided tour of any sites you missed earlier. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner as you prepare for your journey home, marking the successful completion of your Upper Dolpo Trek.
