Overview

The Short ABC Trek is a challenging yet rewarding adventure, requiring good fitness and preparation. Since altitude sickness can be a concern, it’s essential to acclimatize properly and take necessary precautions. The best times to book this trek are from September to November and March to May, when the weather is most stable.

The journey begins with a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a private drive to Siwai, where the trek officially starts. From Siwai, the trail winds through lush rhododendron and bamboo forests, terraced fields, and suspension bridges on the way to Chomrong, offering early views of the Machhapuchhre and Annapurna massifs.

From Chomrong, the trail continues upward to Dovan, passing through more vibrant forests. On the fourth day, you’ll trek from Dovan to Deurali via the scenic Modi Khola, Himalaya Hotel, and Hinku Cave.

Day five is the highlight of the trek: after reaching Machhapuchhre Base Camp, you’ll continue through the stunning Modi Khola Glacier Valley to Annapurna Base Camp. Here, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Hiunchuli, the Annapurna range (including Annapurna I), Khangsar Kang, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre. You’ll spend the night at Annapurna Base Camp.

The descent begins on day six, as you trek back down to Sinuwa. The next morning, you’ll continue to Jhinu Danda, where you can relax in the natural hot springs. After enjoying Jhinu Danda, you’ll return to Siwai for a drive back to Pokhara. The afternoon is free for exploring Pokhara’s attractions, shopping, or boating on the beautiful Phewa Lake.

Your trek concludes the following morning with a tourist bus ride back to Kathmandu. This itinerary is a condensed and slightly easier version of our classic 14-day Annapurna Base Camp trek, with additional rest breaks included.

Is the Short ABC Trek Suitable for You?

The Short ABC Trek is ideal for those seeking a rewarding Himalayan experience within a limited timeframe.

The trek involves several hours of hiking daily, often on steep and rocky terrain, reaching elevations above 4,000 meters. A good fitness level and physical preparation are necessary. If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are new to strenuous activity, consult a doctor beforehand.

Experienced trekkers will find it manageable, but first-time hikers can also complete it with proper preparation, possibly hiring a guide or porter for extra support. Be aware of unpredictable weather conditions and equip yourself with appropriate clothing and gear.
