Itinerary
Your Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek begins with a 45-minute domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, offering scenic views from above.
From Bhadrapur, you'll travel to Illam by local transport, which takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. After checking into your accommodation in Illam, you can explore the region's famous tea estates.
Illam, known for its tea plantations and mountain views, began tea cultivation in the 1860s. Today, it produces premium black, green, and white teas.
On Day 2 of the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek, you'll travel by bus or jeep. After breakfast, you'll head from Illam to Taplejung, likely in a jeep due to the rough, uneven road.
As you drive, you'll pass farmland and leave the tea plantations behind. The Kanchenjunga Massif may come into view. The journey offers stunning scenery and forests, with the road becoming steeper and more switchbacked after Phidim. Upon reaching Taplejung, you'll enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
Today's Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek will pass through extensive subtropical rainforest, following the valley with crossings of tributaries. The local Kiranti people, now known as Limbus, primarily practice traditional agriculture. On the way to Lalikharka, where you'll stay in a tea house, you'll cross Batase, Deurali, and Deurali Bhanjyang.
Today's Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek begins with a climb to a ridge, followed by a sharp descent into Simbu. From there, the trail ascends steeply to Kunjari, a village surrounded by bamboo and banana trees. After descending a steep, hot road, you'll cross a suspension bridge over the Phawa Khola.
A long uphill walk leads to the Gurung hamlets, where you'll find welcoming tea houses for lodging, including Kande Bhanjyang, Sinchebu, and Sinchewa Bhanjyang. The rest of the day is spent in the Kabeli Valley.
During the trek, you'll get your first views of the Kangchenjunga range. The route then enters a forest and continues to Khesewa, a prosperous town known for its millet, maize, and rice cultivation.
After a hearty breakfast in Khesewa, you'll begin your trek toward Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. As you journey through this scenic landscape, you'll catch glimpses of the peaks of Simvu, Jannu, and Kanchenjunga. In spring, the rhododendron forests are alive with vibrant blooms.
After packing, you'll hike through mixed forests along a relatively flat path toward Kabeli Khola, passing several small waterfalls. Heading north, you'll stop for lunch at Yangpang, where you can enjoy stunning views of Mount Jannu. The day concludes with a steep 20-minute ascent to Pumpe Dada.
Today's hike is mostly uphill along a moderate path following the Kabeli Khola. You'll be captivated by the ridge that rises beyond the creek. After a few switchbacks, the trail passes through debris from previous landslides behind rocky cliffs.
The hike meanders through meadows dotted with wildflowers and rhododendron forests. Keep an eye out for Himalayan pheasants and predatory birds like eagles and kites. Throughout the day, the Kanchenjunga massif remains visible. After walking through small settlements and crossing a short suspension bridge, you'll arrive in Yamphuding.
Most hikers take the direct route to Torongding, following a well-maintained stepped trail through historic rhododendron forests on the way to Lasiya (Lamite) Bhanjyang.
From Lasiya, the trail descends to a grassy pass with views of Mt. Jannu (Kumbakarna) to the northeast, overlooking a large landslide. Next, you'll climb about 150 meters before descending in a muddy zigzag through a lush forest to the Simbuwa Khola. The trail then ascends again to Torongding.
Today's Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek will take you through pine and rhododendron forests and pastureland, where you might spot a herd of playful yaks grazing.
After crossing Yak Kharka and Anda Phedi, you'll reach a Buddhist shrine decorated with prayer flags, Trisuls, and rock cairns. This shrine marks a sacred boundary of the valley and includes a small cave. The rest of your journey will pass through a vast meadow with a solitary cottage at 3870 meters, which serves as a makeshift lodge.
After passing through a scenic pine and rhododendron forest with a small stream, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek trail ascends, crossing a loose culvert before reaching Yak Kharka. From Cheram, you’ll ascend briefly to the start of the Yalung Glacier.
The view is breathtaking as you climb over the glacier’s snout and enter a series of ablation valleys. On the terminal moraine, you'll see a frozen lake and clear streams, with the peaks of Talung (7,349m), Kabru (7,338m), and Rathong (6,678m) surrounding you. Ramche, the last teahouse on the trek, offers stunning views of Mt. Jannu, Nyukla Lanchung, and other mountains, as well as the South Face of Kanchenjunga from Oktang.
Today’s walk will be easier as you return to a lower elevation. You’ll retrace the route from Day 8, passing through towns like Lapsang and Yalung Bara on the way back to Cheram. From Cheram, you’ll continue through Anda Phedi and Pasang Danda to reach Torongding. Enjoy the scenic countryside as you take a long but relaxing journey.
Your journey begins in Torongding, heading toward Lasiya Bhanjyang. To reach Lasiya Bhanjyang, you’ll climb 150 meters above a hazardous slip on the right. The route ascends through silver pines beyond Bhatti, offering distant views of Kumbhakarna (7,711m) in the northeastern highlands.
As you move past the yaks, the path improves and continues with a long descent to Amji Khola. After an hour's hike, crossing Chitre's open Kharka (2,926m), you’ll reach a key junction marked by a wooden bench, or Chautara. Finally, you’ll arrive at Yamphuding, a Sherpa village also known as Sherpagaon.
On the final day of your Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, you’ll hike for six to seven hours from Yamphuding to Ranipul, then take a local vehicle to Phidim.
The trail starts with a short uphill climb, followed by a mostly downhill descent to Ranipul, where you’ll travel for about four hours with a lunch break along the way. As you reach the peaceful forest, enjoy the serene surroundings. Ranipul, a small settlement near the Tamar River, marks the end of your trek. From there, you’ll pass through charming villages and terraced hills before reaching Phidim.
After breakfast, you'll take a local jeep from Phidim to Bhadrapur, traveling through the foothills into Nepal’s lowland Terai region. From Bhadrapur, you'll catch a domestic flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy aerial views of several snow-capped peaks, including Makalu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and Everest.
Your Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek ends with a scenic 45-minute flight. Upon arriving at Kathmandu, our team will greet you at the airport and transfer you to a hotel in Thamel. The day concludes with a farewell dinner at a traditional Nepalese restaurant, featuring a live performance.
