Tibet temporarily closed - 20-Mar-2008
As part of the preparation of the Beijing Olympics 2008 to be held in August, China has stopped all the expedition activities to Everest Base Camp from its side between May 1 to 10. A team of athletes is ready to take an Olympic torch to the top of Everest between May 1 and 10 to mark the beginning of Beijing Olympics. The torch is scheduled to be rallied in 22 different cities around the world. Meanwhile due to sporadic protests staged by Tibetans in Lhasa, China has temporarily closed off Tibet, especially Lhasa, for tourists. Subsequently, the Chinese embassy in Nepal has also stopped issuing visas for tourists planning to go to Tibet from here until the situation comes back to normalcy. Thus the travel agencies based in Nepal are not operating any trips to Tibet at the moment. The Chinese government is expected to open up Tibet shortly after as soon as the protest and rallies subside down. |
